How and when did you first encounter the Salesian Sisters?
I first encountered the Salesian Sisters when I was seven years old and attending CCD in preparation for my first penance and first communion. When I was ready to attend 7th grade, my father was concerned about the environment in the public schools. He had me transferred to St. Michael's school in Atlantic city where I saw the commitment and dedication of the sisters there to their students. Some of the sisters were: Sr. Catherine Altamura, Sr. Angela DeCapua, Sr. Clare Kennelly, Sr Virginia Bickford (who is now a Salesian missionary sister in Kenya), and many others who have already gone to Salesian paradise.
What helped you when you were discerning?
When I was discerning my vocation, the presence of dedicated, energetic & joy-filled Salesian Sisters in my life was the greatest help ever! Their example, and their patience in always making us feel welcomed was what clinched my entrance into the Institute.
Who are your favorite saints?
I always believe in going to the top! My favorite saint is Mary Help of Christians... She is a mother and guide to all in our Salesian family. Of course, after her, my favorites are Don Bosco and Mother Mazzarello.
Any funny stories to share?
When I was at Camp Auxilium Learning Center, one of the dads related this story to me. It was one of the first days of school, and when he came to pick up his 4 year old son, Danny, the boy seemed to be a bit preoccupied. The father, concerned, kept asking him what was the matter, to which the boy kept replying, "nothing." Finally the father said, "Danny, you look sad. Why are you sad?" Danny replied, "I'm not sad, I just don't know why those maids are always working so hard!" Now the father was perplexed. "What maids?" he asked. Danny replied, "You know, daddy, the ones with the white hats and aprons!" At that time, the sisters at camp usually wore these white aprons with small blue flowers on them. I guess little Danny was concerned about the sisters!
How do you like to pray?
I like to pray with simplicity and according to what is going on around me in my life. I like to see God in the events of every day and in the lives of the people around me. The older I get, the more I like silent prayer... just being before the Lord and His mother, placing everyone and everything before them.
