Around the World

Founded by St. John Bosco and St. Mary Domenica Mazzarello in the small Italian town of Mornese, the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians is now present in 97 countries around the world. From our very origins, the missionary dimension has been an essential element of our Institute’s identity.

On November 14, 1877 the first missionary expedition of six Salesian Sisters left for Uruguay from Italy. They would soon be followed by a second group of missionaries sent to Argentina in January 1879. The Salesian Sisters would eventually reach the continents of Asia in 1891 and Africa in 1893 with the most recent expedition being Papua New Guinea in 2001.

The same Salesian Spirit carried out in Mornese, continues today in America and throughout the world. Internationally, we have a wide variety of apostolates dedicated to the salvation of young people including professional and literacy schools, youth centers, hostels for girls at risk, economic development programs for women, drug rehabilitation centers, and catechetical centers, to name just a few.
