Adopt a Sister

Frequently Asked Questions

"This may sounds odd but – what's in it for me?"

The Adopt a Sister program has more to do with faith than with money. This was the reaction of an adopter when he realized the spiritual benefits of the program. A donation to Adopt a Sister is like an offering to light a votive candle in church. It burns all day for your special needs while you are busy with other tasks. Well, unlike the candle which burns out at the end of the day or the week, your adopted Sister will offer prayers and sacrifices for you, wherever you live, for one entire year. We have adopters in all 50 states and many foreign countries. The gift keeps giving, as they say. And we fervently hope that a spiritual friendship is formed with "your" Sister.

I want to know if all the Sisters are up for "adoption" and if I can adopt more than one Sister?

Although the program supports the Sisters' Retirement Fund, each of the Sisters (young and old) can be adopted. And yes you can adopt as many Sisters as you wish!

Do the Sisters have more than one adopter? Does my donation go directly to my adopted Sister?

Yes, the Sisters have more than one adopter each. But don't fret! The Sisters really concern themselves with the spiritual side of the program. They take each adopter's needs to heart and offer daily prayer on his or her behalf. Your adopted Sister won't personally see your gift. Only the Development Director does. All gifts go to the Sisters' Retirement Fund from which all the Sisters benefit.

Is it all right to write to my Sister or call her up?

Your adopted Sister can only promise to pray for you and your needs. Write to her? Sure, but remember that she's not a pen pal. If you want to talk to your adopted Sister, please ask her if it would be all right.

Sounds like a great program. What do I do now?

It's quite simple. Just send us all your information, name, address, phone, date of birth, the adopter’s name and respective information and send it with your donation to:

Sr. Mary Rinaldi, FMA
Development Office
659 Belmont Avenue
North Haledon, NJ 07508-2397

Or if it’s easier for you, we accept Discover, MasterCard and VISA via telephone. You can obtain download the donation form by clicking here.

The Missionary Society of Salesian Sisters is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization. Your gift is tax-deductible. Once we receive it, we'll assign you a Sister to whom you can send your prayer requests.

You'll also receive an "adoption" certificate, your Sister's picture, address, and birthday. You will also receive our magazine, Partners in Giving, where you can see what we've been up to.

We'll even send you reminders if you're donating quarterly or monthly, unless you indicate that you don't want them. At the end of your year, we will send you a renewal notice (i.e., If you adopt in May, you'll get a renewal form in May of the next year).

Sister, I have an unlisted phone number and I really don't want anyone else to get hold of it. Well, rest easy. We do not give out names of our donors to other organizations. We like to take care of our adopters in any and every way we can.
